Kohima: Advisor for Social Welfare, Wangpang Konyak, on Thursday announced that the Nagaland government is planning to establish old-age homes in all districts of the state.
Konyak made the announcement as he addressed an Eye Camp for Senior Citizens as the Chief Guest at the District Hospital, Mon. The programme was jointly organised by the Department of Social Welfare and Mercy Eye Centre, Dimapur, with support from the District Hospital, Mon.
In his address, Konyak said it was a privilege to be part of a programme aimed at restoring eyesight for elderly citizens, adding that such initiatives remind society that “our elders are not left behind.” He stated that the Department of Social Welfare is committed to uplifting vulnerable groups through social assistance, nutritional support, and protection for those at risk — including senior citizens.
Highlighting various welfare schemes for the elderly such as the Old Age Pension, Elderly Helpline, and Charity Care, Konyak informed that the government plans to establish an Old Age Home in every district.
He also urged the beneficiaries to follow doctors’ advice for a speedy recovery and extended his gratitude to Mercy Eye Centre, Dimapur, Dr. Chingkup Konyak and his team, the District Hospital, Mon, and Deputy Commissioner Mon for their cooperation and support in organising the camp.
Deputy Commissioner Mon, Wennyei Konyak, in his brief remarks, expressed appreciation to the Advisor, Mercy Eye Centre Dimapur, and the District Hospital team. He noted that blindness remains a concern in society due to lack of facilities and awareness, and encouraged the gathering to undergo regular eye check-ups for a healthier and more comfortable life.
Dr. Ngopole Keviechu, DTO Mon, shared insights on the importance of eyesight and eye medication, while Dr. Chingkup from Mercy Eye Centre, Dimapur, presented an overview of the camp’s objectives.
The programme was chaired by Khonbeni Jami, CDPO Phomching. The welcome address was delivered by T. Yanlem, District Welfare Officer, Mon, followed by an invocation by David Konyak, Chaplain of District Hospital, Mon. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Amilo Yanthan, CDPO Tizit.
