Kohima: In a breakthrough, Dimapur Police have uncovered a well-organised vehicle fraud racket, resulting in the arrest of three individuals and the recovery of 15 vehicles that had been illegally mortgaged without the knowledge of their rightful owners.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Mughaboto (39), Yambothung Ngullie (22), and Kinigha Chishi (23). According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) and PRO of Dimapur Police, the trio posed as used car dealers to target unsuspecting private vehicle owners and car rental companies.
Police revealed that the accused approached individuals looking to sell their vehicles or engaged with car rental firms under the guise of hiring vehicles. Once they gained possession, the vehicles were fraudulently used as collateral to secure loans from unsuspecting third parties, without the consent or knowledge of the actual owners.
According to the police, this deceptive practice allowed the accused persons to obtain substantial sums of money, effectively defrauding numerous private vehicle owners and commercial car rental companies, by taking loans from several persons.
The police acted upon receiving complaints, leading to the recovery of 15 assorted vehicles which have since been returned to their rightful owners.
In this connection, a case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to uncover the full extent of the operation, the police stated.
