Dimapur: The Nagaland unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has vehemently condemned the alleged misconduct of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, towards Nagaland’s Rajya Sabha MP S. Phangnon Konyak.
The party deemed the incident a gross violation of parliamentary decorum, insulting women and representatives from the Northeast.
In a statement released on Friday, the BJP Nagaland State asserted that Gandhi’s actions were not only disrespectful to Konyak personally but also to the people of Nagaland she represents.
The party demanded an immediate and unconditional apology from Gandhi and the Congress Party. Furthermore, it urged authorities to take appropriate action to uphold the sanctity of democratic institutions. The BJP urged citizens to condemn such acts and oppose intimidation or disrespect.
The BJP Nagaland also accused the Congress Party of having a “deep-seated disregard for the rights and dignity of women and representatives from the Northeast,” citing the alleged incident as evidence. The party went on to say that this incident reflects the animosity Gandhi and the Congress Party harbor towards BJP MPs.
Adding their voice to the condemnation, the BJP Nagaland Yuva Morcha staged a demonstration outside Congress Bhawan in Dimapur on Friday. Protesters expressed their anger by burning pictures of Mr. Gandhi and demanding justice and an apology. Protest signs read, “Congress is anti-tribal, anti-women. They should apologise,” and “Rahul Gandhi should apologise for insulting women.”
The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has refuted the allegations made by Ms. Konyak against Mr. Gandhi, calling them “baseless accusations” intended to deflect from important issues.
