Dimapur: The Rengma Selo Zi (RSZ), the apex youth organisation of the Rengma Nagas, has issued a strong ultimatum to the Dimapur district administration, demanding immediate action against those responsible for the alleged assault on three innocent youths. The incident, which occurred on the night of December 17, has drawn widespread condemnation from the community.
According to the RSZ, the victims include two brothers from the Rengma community, one of whom is a student and an active member of the organisation. The brothers were reportedly attacked while attempting to assist a friend and his colleague, who were initially detained by individuals claiming to be Naga National Workers.
“Such heinous acts cannot and will not be tolerated by the Rengma Selo Zi or the Naga people,” the RSZ declared, emphasising the seriousness of the situation.
The organisation condemned the assault as particularly egregious, given the broader context of the Naga people’s ongoing efforts to achieve peace and resolve the long-standing political issue. “This incident…is deeply disturbing and unacceptable, particularly at a time when the Naga people are yearning for peace and resolution of the long-pending Naga political issue,” the RSZ stated.
In a letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, the RSZ demanded that the group responsible for the attack be held accountable. They insisted that the government immediately book the culprits under the law and initiate appropriate punishment for their criminal actions. The RSZ also demanded the perpetrators’ arrest within three days of the letter being issued and called for a public apology from the responsible group to the entire Naga community for their anti-national actions. They stated that the apology must be delivered in a public forum before the Naga people.
The RSZ has warned that failure to meet these demands within the stipulated time frame will compel the organization to take democratic measures to ensure justice.
“The safety and dignity of every citizen must be safeguarded, especially when groups misuse the guise of national service to perpetrate crimes against innocent individuals,” the RSZ stated.
The incident has sparked alarm and raised serious concerns about the misuse of authority by certain groups. The RSZ underscored its commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of the Rengma people and urged the district administration to address the matter with utmost urgency.
The assault has prompted calls from the community for stronger measures to prevent such incidents and to hold accountable those who exploit their positions under the guise of national service. With tensions running high, the RSZ’s demands highlight the growing frustration among the Naga people regarding the lack of accountability for actions that threaten the peace and unity of the region.
