Kohima: Bhutan and Nagaland celebrated their shared cultural heritage at the 17th Hornbill International Naga Wrestling Championship 2024, as HE Jigme Thinlye Namgyal, Consul General of Bhutan, attended the event as a special guest.
The Consul General of Bhutan, in his address, expressed his admiration for Nagaland’s cultural richness and natural beauty during the championship held at Chiechama Ground on Friday.
He highlighted the shared cultural affinities between Bhutan and Nagaland and expressed gratitude to the Nagaland Government for facilitating their visit, allowing them to witness the premier wrestling event of the Hornbill Festival.
“We may be miles apart but I always find us getting along so well as friends. We share affinity with you in your love for your unique cultural heritage, the closeness to the natural environment and community bonhomie. The scenic rolling hills, lush green forest, fresh air and clear sky in your place are a wonderful sight! We get a home away from home feeling being in your beautiful state,” he said.
He described the Hornbill Festival as a remarkable celebration that beautifully showcases the traditions of Nagaland’s 18 major tribes. He also commended the festival’s colorful attire, rich musical heritage, and traditional cuisine, drawing similarities to Bhutanese culture.
“Wrestling, which we get to witness here today, is a traditionally cherished sport in my culture too,” he said.
The Consul General’s delegation included officials from Bhutan’s eastern region, especially from Trashigang Dzongkhag, who are preparing for the upcoming Rhododendron Week scheduled for April 3-9, 2025, in Merak and Sakten. Namgyal shared that the visit had been a learning experience for his team as they observed the organization of the internationally renowned Hornbill Festival.
He informed the attendees that Rhododendron, known as “Etho-Metho” in Bhutan’s Dzongkha language, is also Nagaland’s state flower. He further revealed that the world’s tallest rhododendron tree can be found in Nagaland, on Mount Japfü, which he mentioned is not too far from the event location. Namgyal expressed delight over the coincidence, remarking that it was auspicious to be able to share details about Bhutan’s upcoming “Rhododendron Week” festival with their Naga friends on this occasion.
Namgyal extended an invitation to the people of Nagaland to visit Bhutan.
