Kohima: A 2-Day Language Convention of Naga Languages was launched at Ura Academy, Kohima.
The convention, organised by the Department of Tenyidie, Centre for Naga Tribal Language Studies (CNTLS), and the Department of Linguistics, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, aims to celebrate the diverse oral traditions of the Naga people.
The event is presented in collaboration with Sahitya Akademi (National Academy of Letters), New Delhi, and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The convention provides a platform for Naga languages from various districts of Nagaland to showcase their unique cultural heritage.
Dr. N. Suresh Babu, Deputy Secretary of Sahitya Akademi, inaugurated the event, urging attendees to reconnect with their roots through language preservation. He emphasized the significance of mother tongue use and the importance of conducting such conventions to safeguard cultural traditions.
Prof. G. T. Thong, Pro Vice Chancellor at Nagaland University’s Kohima Campus, expressed appreciation for the well-timed convention. He highlighted Nagaland’s linguistic diversity, with 19 languages and 16 tribes, each possessing its own variations, and stressed the need to document and conserve this rich heritage.
Dr. Mimi Kevichusa Ezung, the convention coordinator, outlined the event’s objectives, including encouraging each tribe to contribute a poem, a folktale, a lullaby, and a translated work to their existing literature.
Dr. Imlienla Imchen concluded the inaugural program with a vote of thanks.
