Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has raised serious concerns over the actions of Naga political groups, questioning whether the Nagas have indeed given them the mandate to impose capital punishment for issues related to illegal taxation.
Rio’s remarks come in light of recent threats issued by the NSCN-K Khango group, in enforcing extreme measures based on their interpretation of the Naga yehzabo (constitution).
During the final day of the monsoon Assembly session, Rio referenced a letter submitted by one NSCN group. In the letter, the group reportedly acknowledged that since its inception, it has sustained itself through contributions mandated by the Nagas, enabling it to exert its political rights.
The letter implied that the group believes it has the authority to collect taxation and that any challenge to this authority could result in capital punishment as per its constitution.
Rio questioned the justification of enforcing capital punishment as enshrined in the Naga groups’ yehzabo, given that these groups claim to work for the people. He emphasised the gravity of the situation and stressed the need for serious and respectful discussions.
Following the recent death threat on a contractor by the NSCN-K Khango group, thousands of people from various Naga communities gathered in the heart of Kohima to protest against unabated multiple taxation, harassment, intimidation, and death threats by Naga Political Groups (NPGs).
