Kohima: The results for the Municipal and Town Council Elections 2024 in Nagaland, held on June 26, were declared on June 29, marking a significant political event in the state.
The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) emerged as the clear winner, securing the largest number of seats. Out of a total of 278 seats contested, the NDPP achieved a substantial victory.
Out of the total of 278 candidates who won, 176 are male and 102 are female. A significant milestone was achieved with the successful implementation of one-third women reservation in the election. Eight women were elected from general (unreserved) wards.
As per data provided by the State Election Commission (SEC), Nagaland chief minister Rio-led NDPP secured 153 seats, BJP with 25 seats, Naga People’s Front (NPF) with 13 seats, NCP with 12 seats, Congress with seven seats, NPP and JDU with five seats each, LJP with two seats, and 56 Independent party candidates.
The election saw a voter turnout of 81.66%, with 184,126 electors casting their votes across 214 wards in 24 municipalities. The counting process was conducted across 16 approved centers. 64 candidates were elected uncontested.
Among the notable winners are Nzanrhoni I. Mozhui (22), BJP candidate from Ward 1, Bhandari Town Council, as the youngest and Sibeule (71), NDPP candidate from Ward 6, Peren Town Council.
Yimkumba (NDPP) from Ward 12, Dimapur Municipal Council, won by 3,344 votes, making him the candidate with the highest vote margin. As for the narrowest margins, Temjennungsang (NDPP) from Ward 8, Changtongya Town Council, Kadielhi Mero (NDPP) from Ward 6, Pfutsero Town Council, and Lathaingam Ruangmei (NDPP) from Ward 9, Jalukie Town Council, won their respective seats by a margin of just one vote.
The ULB polls covered three municipalities and 22 town councils in 10 districts sans the eastern part of the state.
Municipal Councils:
Under the Kohima Municipal Council, NDPP won 13 seats, NPP and Independent candidates won three seats each.
Under the Mokokchung Municipal Council, NDPP won 15 seats, INC won one seat and Independent candidates won two seats.
Under the Dimapur Municipal Council, NDPP won 15 seats, INC won one seat and Independent candidates won two seats.
Town Councils:
Under the East Dimapur Town Council, NDPP won 8 seats, BJP won one seat, and Independent candidates won two seats.
Under the Niuland Town Council, BJP won six seats, and Independent candidates won three seats.
Under the Chumoukedima Town Council, NDPP won 6 seats, BJP won 3, INC and Independent candidates won one seats each.
Under the Medziphema Town Council, NDPP won 6 seats and Independent candidates won three seats.
Under the Chiephobozou Town Council, NDPP won all 9 seats.
Under the Peren Town Council, NDPP won 7 seats and Independent candidates won two seats.
Under the Tening Town Council, NDPP won 4 seats, NCP won three, and Independent candidates won two seats.
Under the Jalukie Town Council, NDPP won 6 seats, INC won one, and Independent candidates won two seats.
Under the Wokha Town Council, BJP won three seats, NDPP won seven, and NCP won five seats.
Under the Bhandari Town Council, BJP, JDU, and Independent candidates won one seats each and NPF won 6 seats.
Under the Zunheboto Town Council, NDPP won 10 seats, and Independent candidates won three seats.
Under the Satakha Town Council, NDPP won 6 seats, LJP won two, and Independent candidate won one seat.
Under the Atoizu Town Council, NDPP won one seat, NCP won four, BJP won two, and Independent candidates won two seats.
Under the Aghunato Town Council, NDPP won 6 seats, and Independent candidates won three seats.
Under the Tseminyu Town Council, NDPP won 4 seats, JDU won four, and Independent candidate won one seat.
Under the Tuli Town Council, NDPP won two seats, BJP won three, INC won three and Independent candidate won one seat.
Under the Changtonya Town Council, NDPP won 7 seats, and Independent candidates won four seats.
Under the mangkolemba Town Council, NDPP won 4 seats, INC won one, and Independent candidates won four seats.
Under the Phek Town Council, NDPP won 3 seats, NPF won seven, and Independent candidate won one seat.
