Dimapur: Randeep Surjewala, the General Secretary of AICC, took part in a campaign rally organised by the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) in Dimapur. The rally, intended to support Supongmeren Jamir, the Congress’s candidate from Nagaland for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, witnessed Surjewala’s impassioned address. He took the place of Mallikarjun Kharge, President of AICC, who was unable to attend due to illness.

Surjewala’s speech addressed critical issues such as India’s constitutional values, the Naga political situation, Article 371 (A), and national policies under the Modi government. He expressed concerns over attacks on cultural diversity, unemployment, and rising commodity prices, framing a narrative critical of the ruling BJP-NDPP alliance’s governance and policies.

He accused the BJP of undermining India’s constitutional ethos, pluralism, and diversity, alleging a concerted effort to erode these foundational principles. Surjewala highlighted the BJP’s divisive tactics and its impact on ethnic languages, customs, and traditions, attributing these actions to an assault on India’s constitution.

Surjewala criticized the NDPP-BJP alliance for failing to address the Naga political issue despite their substantial political clout. He highlighted the prolonged process of the Naga Peace Solution and expressed disappointment over its lack of implementation.

On Article 371(A), Surjewala emphasized its importance in safeguarding Naga traditions and culture, warning against attempts to alter the constitution. He questioned the NDPP’s ability to protect Article 371(A) and asserted that Congress candidate Supongmeren Jamir would defend it in parliament.

Regarding the Free Movement Regime (FMR) with Myanmar, Surjewala criticised the Modi government’s intentions to abolish it without proper consultation, raising concerns about its impact on cross-border relations and trade.

On the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Surjewala opposed its imposition, arguing for a process of dialogue and consensus. He warned against the potential erasure of Naga customs and culture under the UCC.

Surjewala also addressed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), raising concerns about its discriminatory nature and its impact on minorities’ rights.

Regarding socioeconomic issues, Surjewala highlighted the high prices of essential commodities and the alarming levels of unemployment in Nagaland, criticizing the state government’s failure to address these challenges effectively.

In summary, Surjewala’s address at the rally underscored the Congress party’s commitment to defending India’s constitutional values, protecting Naga interests, and addressing pressing socioeconomic issues facing the region.
