The Nagaland unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) commemorated its 44th Foundation Day on Saturday, April 6, with programs held across the state, excluding Eastern Nagaland areas.
State BJP President Benjamin Yepthomi led the day’s observance by unfurling the party flag in Zunheboto district. Similar events took place in other districts including Wokha, Mokokchung, Phek, Peren, Dimapur, and Kohima, where state office bearers read out the address from the State President. The units under these districts also participated in the programs.
However, celebrations and flag hoisting were notably absent in the Eastern Nagaland areas. In response to EastMojo, a Nagaland BJP representative said, “It didn’t take place in the Eastern areas because there is an emergency in the Eastern areas.”
During his address, Yepthomi reflected on the party’s origins tracing back to the establishment of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, acknowledging the role of founding leaders such as Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Deendayal Upadhyaya. He also paid tribute to Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
With the upcoming elections to the 18th Lok Sabha scheduled for April 19, 2024, Yepthomi urged stakeholders to unite in support of the People’s Democratic Alliance’s (PDA) consensus candidate for the Nagaland Parliamentary Constituency, Dr. Chumben Murry.
Earlier today, the Konyak Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), on Saturday issued a summon to the president of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), Chingwang Konyak, over his statement on the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO)’s demand for a Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT).
Through a letter, the tribal body summoned the NDPP chief for his “recent actions that have contravened the explicit directives set forth by the Konyak Union (KU) on 30th March 2024, directing all its citizens not to engage in commentary remarks on the ENPO FNT matter”.
The Foundation Day celebration coincided with the upcoming elections, highlighting the BJP’s positioning within Nagaland’s political arena alongside other parties.
