Kohima: Former MLA Dr Chumben Murry, the consensus candidate of Nagaland’s Peoples’ Democratic Alliance (PDA), and Supongmeren Jamir, the state’s Congress chief, filed their nominations on Tuesday to contest the lone Lok Sabha seat in the state.
So far, three candidates from the NDPP, Congress and an independent candidate filed nominations to fight the parliamentary seat.
During the filing of the nomination, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) candidate Dr Chumben Murry was accompanied by several legislators including BJP Legislature party leader Y Patton.
In 2022, Murry, a former Naga People’s Front (NPF) MLA, joined the NDPP when 21 NPF legislators “merged” with the NDPP just months ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections.
In the state Assembly poll held last year, Murry opted out of the race. Following the formation of the new government, he was appointed as an advisor to the chief minister of Nagaland.
As for the Congress candidate, Jamir became the chief of the party’s state unit after former president K Therie resigned from the post after the Congress failed to secure a seat in the state polls.
Following a ticket handing ceremony held at the Congress Bhavan in Kohima, the Congress leader filed for nominations to contest the lone Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland.
On Monday, the Rising People’s Party (RPP) had announced its decision to opt out of the parliamentary poll race and extended its support towards the Congress candidate.

Meanwhile, Independent candidate Hayithung Tungoe Lotha became the first candidate to officially join the race for the 18th Lok Sabha Election by filing his nomination papers on Friday at the Commissioner Nagaland & Returning Officer’s Office in Kohima.
The deadline for submitting nomination papers is set for Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 3:00 pm.
