Kohima: Ahead of the fourth session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, the Nagaland National Pension System Government Service Employees’ Forum (NNPSGSEF) has once again voiced apprehensions regarding the transition from the old pension scheme to the new, citing concerns over diminished social security provisions and reduced pension benefits for retirees.
Employees recruited after 2010, gathered at the civil secretariat junction in Kohima to raise concerns over the new pension scheme.
The peaceful dharna was organised, coinciding with the national strike held by the All India State Government Employees Federation (AISGEF).
In September 2023, a representation was submitted to the state government but received no response.
According to the organisation, the old pension scheme offered employees a sense of social security with a guaranteed lifetime reasonable pension.
In contrast, the new scheme, as per NNPSGSEF’s assertion, fails to provide the same level of social security and guarantees lower monthly pension payments for retirees who live longer.

The protest comes days after Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang had announced the restoration of the Old Pension System (OPS) for state government employees appointed on or after April 1, 2006, ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections.
With this, Sikkim became the first state in the Northeast to reintroduce the OPS. The announcement was made during the State Level Temporary Employees’ Convention held at Public Ground Rangpo on February 9th, where several welfare measures were introduced to benefit the people of Sikkim.
