Nagaland govt seeks continuation of FMR with Myanmar

Kohima: Following a cabinet meeting, the Nagaland government has decided to approach the Government of India to continue the Free Movement Regime (FMR) with Myanmar.

The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting on Thursday, the state’s home department informed.

At the heart of the discussion was the proposal put forth by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) regarding the implementation of fencing along the Nagaland segment of the border.

After careful consideration, the Cabinet arrived at several decisions aimed at safeguarding the interests of the state’s inhabitants while maintaining essential border movements.

Foremost among these decisions was the Cabinet’s resolution to urge the Central Government to prolong the implementation of the FMR.

Additionally, the Cabinet advocated for the formulation of appropriate regulations and procedural frameworks governing border crossings, emphasising the importance of close consultation with the local populace residing in the border areas.

The Cabinet further resolved to involve village council authorities in the regulatory mechanisms governing the Free Movement Regime.
