Kohima: The Kohima Press Club (KPC) on Monday condemned the recent assault on a local journalist by unidentified miscreants in Kohima.
KPC president Alice Yhoshü and general secretary Atono Tsükrü Kense said the Press body is shocked to learn that its member, Menuseo Khieya, a correspondent of Eastern Mirror, a local daily, was physically assaulted by unidentified person(s) on the night of March 5 at New Market area in Kohima while he was returning home from work.
“He was attacked from behind and rendered in a state of unconsciousness. Besides sustaining multiple injuries on the head and face, and losing a substantial amount of blood, several personal belongings including his cell phone, a copy of his Aadhaar Card and two ATM cards were also lost during the incident,” they informed through a press release.
It said the KPC has taken a serious note of the assault on its member and vehemently condemned the incident.
“Journalists have no fixed timing of work, as we are required to work any time of the day or night, whenever and wherever news can be gathered, so that we can present the correct picture of the happenings around us to the public. But it is such unruly actions as the one meted out on our member on March 5 that brings the safety and security of journalists to question,” the KPC said in the statement.
The body said an inhuman act perpetrated without any reason or provocation cannot simply be brushed aside, saying that it believes in a law that will take its own course to expose the assailant(s) sooner or later.
While condemning the attack, the KPC also appealed to all responsible persons to uphold and encourage the functioning, and the growth of the Fourth Estate.
