Aizawl: A 58-year-old Slovak national has been detained by Mizoram Police for allegedly attempting to cross the India–Myanmar border without valid travel documents, officials at Siaha Police Station said, according to The Assam Tribune.

The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, is currently in custody and is being questioned by state police along with central and state intelligence agencies. Officials said more details about his intent and background are expected to emerge after interrogation.

He was apprehended on Tuesday by Assam Rifles personnel near Laki village, around 60–75 km from Siaha district headquarters. He was later brought to Siaha for further legal procedures and investigation.

Preliminary inputs suggest that the man told authorities he was travelling to Myanmar to attend a traditional water festival, a claim that is being verified.

The incident comes amid increased scrutiny of foreign nationals in the state.

Earlier this month, the National Investigation Agency arrested six Ukrainian nationals and one American citizen from different airports across the country for allegedly entering Mizoram without the required Protected Area Permit (PAP) and crossing into Myanmar.
