Aizawl: Mizoram’s rich silk heritage and growing industry potential were showcased at a grand fashion show, “Tlangro: The Mizoram Silk Runway,” held on Tuesday evening at Aijal Club Park.
The event, jointly organised by the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, the Sericulture Department, Government of Mizoram, and the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC), highlighted the artistry, craftsmanship, and untapped potential of the state’s silk sector.
The show featured a striking display of silk garments by designers Tluangpuii Hmar and Violeta by Sangzuali, drawing attention to Mizoram’s capability to produce all four major varieties of silk, mulberry, eri, muga, and oak tasar. The state’s favourable climate and natural conditions were emphasised as key strengths for sericulture growth.
Speakers at the event noted that with rising global demand for eco-friendly textiles, Mizoram’s silk, particularly eri, holds strong potential in international markets. Sericulture was also highlighted as an important avenue for rural livelihoods and women’s empowerment, offering sustainable income opportunities alongside traditional farming.
Officials underscored the need to strengthen training, infrastructure, market access, and research to fully develop the sector. Suggestions also included promoting value-added products, encouraging youth participation, and leveraging digital platforms and tourism to expand reach.
