Aizawl: The General Headquarters of the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) observed the 19th “Zoram Ni” on March 5 at the MZP Conference Hall in Aizawl. The programme, held under the theme “I ram leh hnam humhalh la, khawvelin a dem lovang che” (Protect your land and nation, and the world will not condemn you), featured a talk show and commemorative session.
During the programme, MZP General Secretary C. Lalhmingsanga presented a report on the observance of Zoram Ni over the years, while the event was chaired by MZP Vice President Sanghmingthanga.
Speaking at the event, MZP President Dr C. Lalremruata said the organisation has been observing March 5 since 2008 to remember the bombing of Mizoram by the Indian Air Force using jet fighters in 1966. He said the observance is not intended to promote hatred against India or incite rebellion, but rather to honour those who sacrificed their lives and those who were injured during the incident.
He said the day is meant to remember the past with unity and respect, while also serving as an opportunity for healing and moving forward together as a people.

The MZP president also referred to remarks made by the Prime Minister of India in Parliament on August 10, 2023, during a discussion on a no-confidence motion, when the Prime Minister mentioned the Indian Air Force’s bombing of Mizoram on March 5, 1966. However, he said the reference was made in the context of political debate rather than as an expression of apology or compassion towards the Mizo people.
He added that the MZP and the Mizo community do not observe the day with hostility or a spirit of rebellion, but hope that the Indian government will acknowledge the wrongdoing and offer an apology to the people of Mizoram.
