Mizoram has recorded the lowest daily milk production in the Northeast, producing only 64.4 thousand kilograms per day during 2024–25, according to the Bureau of Animal Husbandry and Statistics.

In response to the state’s low output, the Mizoram Milk Producers Cooperative Union Limited (MULCO) on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to strengthen milk production and dairy processing in the state.

The MoU was signed at the Chief Minister’s Conference Hall in the presence of Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Minister for Cooperation P.C. Vanlalruata.

The agreement aims to improve productivity, modernise dairy practices and enhance income opportunities for livestock farmers across Mizoram.

The signing ceremony was coordinated by Udit Rai Prakash, IAS, Commissioner and Secretary of the Cooperation Department. Dr. Meenesh Shah, Chairman of the National Dairy Development Board, outlined NDDB’s overall strategy for dairy development and presented proposed interventions through which Mizoram can make measurable progress in milk production and processing.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the agreement would not only help increase milk production but also strengthen rural livelihoods and generate sustainable income for livestock farmers.

He noted that animal husbandry has long been part of Mizo society and that the state has suitable land resources for livestock rearing. He added that the adoption of modern technology and improved management practices would help unlock the sector’s full potential and emphasised the need for a Project Monitoring Unit to ensure effective implementation of the MoU.

The Minister for Cooperation expressed confidence that collaboration with NDDB, an institution with a strong national track record, would significantly strengthen the cooperative movement in Mizoram and deliver tangible benefits to dairy farmers. He also conveyed appreciation to NDDB for extending technical and institutional support to the state.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the Government of Mizoram by Udit Rai Prakash, IAS; on behalf of NDDB by S. Rajeev, Executive Director; and on behalf of MULCO by Lalhmunliani, Managing Director.

Under the Ministry of Cooperation’s flagship scheme, White Revolution 2.0, NDDB will prepare a Comprehensive Dairy Development Plan for Mizoram. The Board will provide technical guidance and support in key areas, while MULCO will be responsible for implementing interventions at the state level.
