Aizawl: Tragedy struck Mizoram cricket on Thursday when K Lalremruata, a seasoned cricketer and wicketkeeper, passed away after collapsing during a match in the Khaled Memorial 2nd Division Screening Tournament.
He was playing for Venghnuai Raiders Cricket Club (VRCC) against Chawnpui ILMOV CC when he experienced breathing difficulties and later succumbed to a stroke.
According to reports, Lalremruata was a wicketkeeper by role and made his First-Class debut against Meghalaya in 2018 and played his last competitive match in 2022 against Nagaland. He represented Mizoram twice in the Ranji Trophy and seven times in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
The Mizoram Cricket Association expressed their condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family; may God comfort them as they navigate this great loss.” The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also mourned his passing, saying, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Mizoram cricketer K Lalremruata. He proudly represented Mizoram in the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The BCCI extends heartfelt condolences, thoughts, and prayers to his family, friends, and the Mizoram cricket community.”
Mizoram Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar paid tribute to the late cricketer, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of K. Lalremruata, who collapsed during a cricket match today (January 8, 2026). My heartfelt condolences go out to his bereaved family, friends, and members of the sporting fraternity during this difficult time. Late K. Lalremruata proudly represented the Mizoram team and is a player of the Venghnuai Raiders Cricket Club. May his soul rest in peace.”
