Champhai: Acting on specific intelligence inputs, Assam Rifles launched two separate operations in Champhai District, Mizoram, over the past few days, leading to the recovery of significant caches of weapons and the apprehension of one suspect.
The first operation began on September 18 in the dense forests of Saikhumphai. On the morning of September 19, troops unearthed a concealed cache containing a Heckler & Koch G3 Assault Rifle, a Springfield Sniper Rifle, a 60 mm Mortar Tube, 21 rounds of assorted ammunition, and 13 grenades.
Additional war-like stores recovered included eight metres of Cordtex, two trip wires, a sniper scope, two RPG range extenders, one AK-47 magazine, one pistol magazine, two radio sets with antennas, a spare antenna, and several miscellaneous items.
Following the recovery, the troops conducted area domination to check for underground cadres. All seized arms and stores were handed over to the Dungtlang Police for further investigation.
The second operation was launched in the early hours of September 21 in the general area of Zokhawthar, following intelligence on illegal arms possession.
Assam Rifles, along with police representatives, cordoned a suspected house and conducted a thorough search. This led to the recovery of a 5.56 mm M4A1 Carbine with magazine, a red dot sight, 19 rounds of 5.56 mm NATO ammunition, and 100 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition.
During the operation, one individual, identified as Robert Vanlalliana, was apprehended. The recovered arms, ammunition, and the suspect were handed over to the Zokhawthar Police for further investigation and legal action.
