Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday visited the state’s first de-addiction and rehabilitation facility established under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, where early results have shown a 74% success rate in helping participants overcome addiction.
The centre, set up at the Synod Camping Centre in Neihbawi, is run jointly by the state government, Young Mizo Association (YMA), Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP), and the Mizoram Synod. The Chief Minister, accompanied by Social Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii, reviewed the facility’s progress and interacted with both staff and recovering addicts.
Speaking at the visit, Lalduhoma acknowledged that drug abuse has placed immense strain on Mizo society, creating not just personal tragedies but also social and economic challenges. “Those struggling with addiction need not only medical care but also guidance, counselling, and skills to rebuild their lives. This centre is designed to provide all of that in a holistic manner,” he said.
The programme is structured as a 20-day recovery cycle: 10 days of medical detoxification, 5 days of psychological counselling, and 5 days of spiritual renewal through camping led by the Synod Revival Department. Recovery support continues for three months through the Referral Task Group to ensure long-term progress.
The demand for the facility has been overwhelming. Though originally designed to accommodate 150 individuals, the first batch admitted 256 persons, the second 544, and the current third batch 208. For the first three batches, the state government has already allocated Rs 108 lakh.
In addition to recovery, the centre equips participants with vocational skills to help them reintegrate into society. So far, 11 trainees have completed food processing courses, while 28 are training as electrical technicians and 18 in aluminium fabrication. Certificates will be issued by the Mizoram Council for Vocational Training.
Lalduhoma encouraged the inmates to stay determined in their journey, assuring them that addiction can be overcome with resilience and courage. He also reminded staff that their role was not merely administrative but a mission of physical and spiritual healing.
