Aizawl: Zoram Medical College & Hospital (ZMC&H) marked its 7th Founding Day today with announcements of major achievements in healthcare services, medical education, and infrastructure. The celebration was graced by Health and Family Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii as chief guest, with Principal Director of Health and Family Welfare Dr. Lalthlengliani chairing the programme.
In her speech, Minister Lalrinpuii commended ZMC&H’s growing role in strengthening Mizoram’s healthcare system and urged medical students to dedicate themselves to serving patients, particularly those battling cancer and other life-threatening conditions.
A highlight of the day was the inauguration of the Charles Robert Darwin Hostel, a 60-bed MBBS Intern Hostel. Construction is underway for two additional male hostels and three female hostels, accommodating up to 600 students, as well as residential quarters for 120 staff members, 70% of which are already complete.
Under the ₹25-crore PM Abhim Scheme, a modern Critical Care Block is being built. Recently, 52 new ward beds, 20 private cabins, and 13 ICU beds were added, bringing the current total bed capacity to 505.
In a first for Mizoram, a Biopsy-Compatible CT Scan is being installed under the Mizoram Health Systems Strengthening Project (MHSSP).
ZMC&H now has 372 doctors, of which 80 are engaged in both patient care and teaching, while 60 specialise in research. Supporting them are 450 nursing, paramedical and allied staff, 120 technical staff, and 60 research personnel.
Through the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme (MUHCS), the hospital recently recruited 2 medical officers, 54 nursing officers, and 13 Group D staff.
Two new specialised units, a Neurosurgery Unit and a Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery Unit (CTVS), have been launched, staffed by MCh-qualified specialists.
The college currently has 394 MBBS students and 98 interns, with 189 graduates from the 2018 and 2019 batches. Students have earned national honours, including wins in a National Level Essay Writing Competition on the Family Adoption Programme and a National Level Quiz.
The hospital’s Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) was awarded “Excellence for Best VRDL 2024” for outstanding contributions to diagnostic research.
ZMC&H continues to strengthen partnerships with premier institutions such as the National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities (NILD), National Emergency Life Support (NELS), and Jodhpur School of Public Health (JSPH).
