Aizawl: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) will soon install a Doppler Weather Radar at Laipuitlang, Aizawl, to boost weather monitoring and early warning capabilities in Mizoram. This major development was shared during a detailed briefing by Sudheer Kumar Dwivedi, Director and Head of the Meteorological Centre Aizawl, to Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), at Raj Bhavan today.
The Governor commended the Centre’s ongoing efforts and noted with appreciation that it will soon mark its second anniversary on July 27, 2025. He lauded the team for providing accurate forecasts and urged stronger coordination with state departments and media to ensure that weather information is widely and clearly communicated, particularly in the Mizo language. He also reiterated the urgency of installing the radar to improve real-time data collection and disaster preparedness.
Dwivedi presented a comprehensive overview of the Centre’s operations and future goals, highlighting the Doppler Radar project as a key step under the central government’s Mission Mausam initiative. Once installed, the radar will significantly enhance Mizoram’s ability to monitor severe weather events such as cyclones, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall.
Currently, the Centre provides VVIP and seven-day forecasts, air quality updates for Aizawl, and destination-specific forecasts for tourists. Updates are shared every six hours through social media and the official IMD website.
Other upcoming developments include a new Meteorological Office in Siaha, the upgrade of the Lengpui Airport station into a full-fledged Aerodrome Meteorological Office, and the creation of a student-focused training and awareness centre in Aizawl.
