Aizawl: A major landslide in Ngopa village, located in Saitual district of Mizoram, forced the evacuation of hospital patients and staff after it struck near the local health facility on Monday. The landslide, which began around 10:30 a.m. and intensified by 2 p.m., also swept away two houses.
According to a local vernacular, Zalen, one of the destroyed structures, was a residential house, while the other functioned as a workshop. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far. However, the landslide has rendered three nearby homes unfit for occupancy, raising concerns over the safety of the entire area.
Hospital authorities acted swiftly, relocating all admitted patients to safer locations. Equipment from the Outpatient Department (OPD) and the hospital kitchen was also moved out as precautionary measures.
Residents and eyewitnesses have attributed the cause of the landslide to recent road-cutting work allegedly carried out by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) in the area. Locals claim that the digging weakened the soil structure, making the hillside vulnerable to collapse during the current monsoon season.
