Aizawl: Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), held a high-level discussion today at Raj Bhavan with senior officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), and the State’s Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Department. The meeting focused on harnessing the potential of ropeway transport under the Centre’s flagship National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana.
The Governor emphasised the urgent need for innovative solutions to tackle Aizawl’s worsening traffic congestion and limited urban space. Highlighting the city’s geographical constraints, he urged officials to explore ropeway alignments beyond the crowded city center. He called for meticulous planning and inter-departmental coordination to ensure the smooth rollout of projects and to address public concerns proactively.
“Parvatmala can be a game-changer for Mizoram. It’s not just about connecting one end of the city to another—it’s about transforming how people move and live in our hilly terrain,” said the Governor. He reiterated the need for inclusive and sustainable development that leverages Mizoram’s unique topography.
Vinay Kumar, Additional Secretary, MoRTH, assured the Governor of the Centre’s full support, noting that the ropeway programme aims to enhance last-mile connectivity in mountainous states. He revealed that 90% of the revenue generated from ropeway operations will be reinvested locally, ensuring tangible benefits for communities and boosting economic growth.
UD&PA Secretary Lalmalsawma Pachuau presented a detailed roadmap for proposed ropeway corridors under the Aizawl Sustainable Urban Transport Project (ASUTP). Covering an expansive 280 sq km area, the project aims to decongest the capital through a comprehensive mobility plan that includes ropeways, pedestrian zones, modernized public transport systems, and regional truck terminals.
The meeting also saw participation from Secretary to the Governor Ajit Roy, UD&PA Director Jacob Lalawmpuia, NHLML Vice President Prashant Jain, and other senior officials.
