Aizawl: Green Mizoram Day was celebrated across the state today with a renewed commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. This year’s theme, “Plant Trees and Catch the Rain,” highlighted the critical importance of afforestation in conserving water and building ecosystem resilience.

The main state-level function was held in Thenzawl, where Environment, Forest & Climate Change Minister Lalthansanga attended as the Chief Guest. The event was chaired by Rajeev Kumar Tiwari, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Member Secretary of the State Level Committee on Green Mizoram.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Lalthansanga stressed the vital role trees play in preserving groundwater, preventing soil erosion, and sustaining biodiversity. He urged all citizens to take active responsibility in protecting Mizoram’s rich natural heritage.

During the function, awards were presented to districts and villages that have demonstrated excellence in fire prevention. Lunglei District received the first prize, followed by Serchhip District in second place and Aizawl District in third. Within Serchhip District, Leng village was recognized with the first prize for fire prevention efforts, while Zote South and Ngentiang villages secured second and third prizes respectively.

Communities that have made significant contributions to wildlife conservation and afforestation efforts were also honored. Among the recipients were Zuchhip YMA, Sairep Village Community, and Serchhip Sub-Hqrs YMA, whose dedication to environmental stewardship was commended.

Green Mizoram Day was originally observed as Green Aizawl Day. In 1999, it was renamed Green Mizoram Day, and in 2014, the Government of Mizoram officially declared June 11 as the annual day of observance. Each year, mass tree-planting drives are conducted across the state to mark the occasion. Since its inception, more than 46 lakh trees have been planted under this initiative.
