Aizawl: Mizoram has recorded a staggering 598 landslide incidents across the state between May 24 and 12 p.m. on June 3, according to the State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department. The state continues to grapple with the aftermath of continuous rainfall and extreme weather conditions, which have triggered widespread damage and displacement.

A total of 171 houses have been damaged, while 244 houses were evacuated due to landslides and another 119 due to flooding. Infrastructural disruptions have also been reported, with 257 areas facing road blockages. In addition, three graveyards have been damaged as a result of the landslides.

Tragically, five lives have been lost in incidents related to the landslides during this period.

Champhai district, which shares its border with Myanmar, has reported the highest number of incidents at 209, followed by Serchhip with 116 cases. Khawzawl recorded 75 incidents, and Lunglei reported 61. The state capital, Aizawl, recorded the lowest number of landslides with 21 incidents.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as monsoon rains persist across the state. Emergency services and local volunteers are working to clear roadblocks and assist affected families.

The government has urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and cooperate with evacuation and relief operations as necessary.
