Aizawl: In a landmark decision, Mizoram has declared the old forest area above Kawnpui village as its first-ever Community Reserve under Section 36(c) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The forest, spanning 620 hectares, has been conserved by the Kawnpui community for years, showcasing a remarkable example of grassroots environmental stewardship.
The decision was made during the 11th meeting of the Mizoram State Board for Wildlife, chaired by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, at the CM’s Conference Hall. The move highlights Mizoram’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage and empowering local communities in conservation efforts.
The meeting also approved key measures to enhance wildlife protection and support affected communities. Wildlife clearance for the project proposal to widen the Pukzing to Silsury road was granted, and the proposal will now be forwarded to the National Board for Wildlife.
Additionally, a rate proposed by the AH & Vety Department to compensate for livestock losses caused by wildlife attacks received approval, with instructions for implementation in the next financial year.
Another significant decision involved providing compensation to six families living within Dampui village, located in the Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary, to facilitate their relocation.
The meeting was attended by Lalthansanga, Minister for Environment, Forests & Climate Change, TBC Lalvenchhunga, Adviser to the CM, T. Lalhlimpuia, MLA, and other members of the Board.
This historic step marks a new chapter in Mizoram’s conservation journey, blending community-driven efforts with governmental support to safeguard the state’s biodiversity.
