Aizawl: Mizoram’s apex student body, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), on Saturday called on the central government to ensure the safety of Mizo students in Manipur, where violence between Meitei and tribal groups has intensified.
According to a report in The Mizoram Post, the MZP expressed deep concern over the security of Mizo students in the state, particularly after the recent killings of 11 Hmar-Mizo tribal people and 8 Meitei civilians.
To safeguard students, the MZP urged the government to temporarily transfer Mizoram’s quota seats in technical and medical institutions in Manipur to outside the state until normalcy is restored and the Manipur government effectively controls the armed Meitei groups.
The organization also appealed to the Mizoram government to ensure the safety of Meitei people currently living in the state, and urged the Manipuri community to take care of their own well-being.
In addition, the MZP criticized the delay in the postmortem of the bodies of 10 tribal victims, who are reportedly still held at Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Assam. The MZP condemned both the central and Manipur governments for the delay in handing over the bodies to their families, adding to the distress of the grieving relatives.
