Aizawl: The Mizoram Oil Tanker Driver Association (MOTDA) and the Petroleum Entrepreneurs and Transporters Union of Mizoram have announced that they will halt operations starting Tuesday due to the deteriorating condition of roads National Highways 306 and 6, the lifeline of the state.
The decision to suspend operations was made after a joint meeting held at Aijal Club on September 14, 2024. According to the associations, the current state of the road poses a high risk of accidents and is no longer suitable for travel. The stretch between Kawnpui and Sairang is Mizoram’s primary transport route for essential goods, making the situation especially concerning.
Many oil tankers have already suffered damage due to the poor road conditions, leading to costly repairs, the unions reported. They stated that until repairs are made to the road, they will cease operations from September 17 onward.
In addition to disrupting the state’s oil supply, the bad roads have also contributed to an increase in vegetable prices, adding to the growing economic burden on residents.
The associations called on the government to take immediate action to repair the vital road link, stressing that continued inaction could lead to further disruptions in the supply of essential goods across the state.
