Aizawl: The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) party has responded to criticism regarding the poor condition of roads in Mizoram, stating that the opposition parties are to blame for the current state of the roads.
According to ZPM, the roads have deteriorated because the previous governments constructed them in such a way that they could not withstand even one monsoon season. The ZPM party came to power after the Mizoram Legislative Assembly elections in November 2023.
Recently, the opposition parties have been vocal on social media, criticizing the government over the deteriorating road conditions. They have accused the current administration of neglecting the maintenance of roads. However, the ZPM has dismissed these allegations, stating that the poor state of the roads is due to the previous government’s failure to construct durable roads, not because of any negligence on their part. The ZPM accused the opposition of making these criticisms to divert attention from their own failures when they were in power.
The ZPM party emphasised that since coming to power, they have had limited time to address these issues due to various constraints, including the lengthy 9th Legislative Assembly sessions and the extended duration of the Model Code of Conduct for the MP elections. They argued that these factors have significantly reduced their ability to carry out developmental work. According to the ZPM, the opposition workers currently criticizing the government were themselves involved in the construction of these substandard roads under the previous administration, and these workers are still in positions of influence.

Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Vanlalhlanna also addressed the situation, stating that plans for repairing damaged roads have already been made. However, due to the ongoing monsoon season, it has been challenging to carry out these repairs effectively.
