Aizawl: As Mizoram grapples with the aftermath of a devastating landslide, volunteers have entered the fourth day of relentless efforts to retrieve lost coffins and repair damaged graveyards.
On Friday, volunteers hailing from Republic Vengthlang and Upper Republic congregated at the locality graveyard, dedicating their entire day to locating lost coffins and salvaging grave stones.
The landslide has left a trail of destruction, with over 20 grave stones shattered due to the force of nature’s fury.
Despite the tragic loss and widespread destruction, Mizoram has witnessed an inspiring display of community spirit, known locally as “tlawmngaihna” or selflessness. Hundreds of volunteers have joined forces, mobilizing to retrieve bodies, clear landslides, and restore the dignity of the deceased by repairing damaged graveyards.
In a poignant scene on Wednesday, more than 600 individuals gathered at Luangmual graveyard, united in their mission to recover coffins. “Seven coffins were found, and we reburied them; however, it was not possible to identify who they were, so they are laid to rest without any identification,” shared one volunteer, Michael Zosangliana, highlighting the heartbreaking reality faced by the community.
Another volunteer recounted the overwhelming challenge faced during the recovery efforts, stating, “The stench emanating from the coffins is so potent that we were unable to eat anything for a long time; however, this is our duty.”

According to a report by Vanglaini on May 29, the extent of the damage is staggering. In the ITI locality alone, approximately 200 graveyards have been ravaged by the landslide. Urging cooperation, local authorities have called upon relatives who buried their loved ones in the affected areas to come forward and report themselves.
In Kanan locality, in a particular area which held 59 gravestones, the impact of the landslide damaged 55. Similarly, graveyards in Kulikawn and Chawnpui have also borne the brunt of nature’s wrath, further underscoring the magnitude of the catastrophe that has befallen Mizoram.
