Powerful storm wreaks havoc in Mizoram

Aizawl: On Sunday, a powerful storm swept through Mizoram, leaving a path of destruction and causing significant damage to homes, livestock, and infrastructure. The storm struck with ferocity, catching many residents by surprise and plunging several districts including Khawzawl, Champhai, Serchhip, Mamit and Saitual into chaos.

Initial reports indicate that numerous houses were demolished in various districts of Mizoram, inflicting substantial losses upon residents. Additionally, several localities in Aizawl City experienced load shedding following the storm, exacerbating the challenges faced by affected communities.

Between 9 and 10 a.m. on Sunday, the storm brought chaos and devastation, as strong winds and heavy rainfall pounded Aizawl and other districts of Mizoram. In Serchhip district, numerous houses bore the brunt of the storm’s fury, with roofs blown away and electricity poles toppled, plunging villages into darkness. Particularly affected were Zohmun and Palsang villages in Aizawl district, where over 50 houses, including churches, suffered damage. A United Pentecostal Church building in Lungtan, Champhai district collapsed as a result of the storm.

In Khawzawl district, an official government notification reported 71 houses and pig sheds damaged by the storm. Efforts to provide relief and assistance to those affected are underway, with Tuichang constituency MLA W Chhuanawma, Deputy Government Chief Whip, and Khawzawl DC K. Lalrohlua coordinating relief measures. Zonal officers have also been dispatched to assess the extent of the damage in affected areas.

East Lungdar village, slated to host the State-wise Church Men’s Conference from April 12 to 14, faced a major setback as the storm ravaged the conference pandal constructed by the Mizoram Synod. The strong winds and heavy rains destroyed the pandal, prompting plans for reconstruction to commence on Monday.
