Shillong: West Khasi Hills on Monday began its month-long Golden Jubilee celebrations, marking 50 years since the district was formed on October 28, 1976.
The celebrations were inaugurated in front of the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Nongstoin in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak, IAS, Superintendent of Police Herbert Kharkongor, ADC V Swer, MCS, BDO Mawshynrut C&RD Block R Kharkongor, Assistant Commissioner Anju, IAS, and other district officials.
Addressing the gathering, Nayak reflected on West Khasi Hills’ five-decade journey and spoke about the challenges and opportunities ahead.
She highlighted the district’s achievements in sports, music and academics while urging young people to play a greater role in shaping its future.
Nayak also expressed concern over the relatively low participation of youth from West Khasi Hills in competitive examinations. She encouraged more young people to pursue such examinations so the district can produce more officers and civil servants who can contribute to its development and that of Meghalaya.
The month-long celebrations will culminate in a closing ceremony on October 28. A series of events, including kite flying, horse racing and other activities, have been planned.
SP Herbert Kharkongor recalled the period when militancy posed a major challenge to peace and development in the district. He said West Khasi Hills had since made considerable progress and moved towards becoming a safer district.
He, however, identified drug abuse as an emerging concern and called for collective efforts by the public, government departments and other stakeholders to address the issue and maintain peace.
ADC V Swer spoke about the history of West Khasi Hills, recalling its formation in 1976 and its significance in Meghalaya’s administrative history.
The inaugural programme also saw the launch of the official Golden Jubilee logo and theme song, composed by Josephas Thongni.
The celebrations were marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a commemorative photograph of dignitaries and officials.
Departmental futsal and basketball matches were also launched as part of the opening programme, bringing together officers and staff from different departments.
The Golden Jubilee celebrations will continue through October, marking West Khasi Hills’ 50-year journey while looking ahead to its future growth and development.
