Meghalaya: Two held after mob assaults three suspected thieves

Shillong: Two persons have been arrested after a mob allegedly assaulted three suspected thieves at 11 Mer, Mylliem, on August 23, East Khasi Hills police said.

According to a press release issued by the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, information was received at Mawngap Police Station at around 5.40 am that suspected thieves had been apprehended by members of the public.

Police personnel who reached the spot found a mob assaulting three persons. Police intervened and rescued the three, identified as Banshan Kurbah, 25, of Mairang Lumkyllang; Albert Marbaniang, 26, and Ibalabet Kharmawlong, 27, both from Mawlai Mawtawar.

Police said the mob allegedly manhandled officers and staff, abused them and continued assaulting the three suspects.

The injured persons were taken to Pomlum PHC for medical examination and later brought to Mawngap Police Station for safe custody. A Maruti car allegedly used by the suspects was also towed and kept at the police station.

The three were subsequently released as no complaint had been received against them.

Police registered a suo motu case at Mawngap Police Station in connection with the incident and the alleged assault. During the investigation, two persons accused of leading the mob attack were arrested.

They have been identified as Arningson Kharkongor alias Arning, 37, of Mylliem Kyndong, 11th Mile, and Pynshaiborlang Kharkongor alias Lung Matok, 33, of Mylliem Kyndong, 11th Mile.

Both were produced before the court, while further investigation is underway.

The police appealed to the public not to take the law into their own hands and to immediately inform the police by calling 112 or contacting the nearest police station in such cases.
