Shillong: Voice of the People Party (VPP) president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit on Tuesday urged the NPP-led government to institute an independent inquiry into the implementation of MLA schemes in Meghalaya.
Basaiawmoit, accompanied by Mawlai MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang and other party leaders, submitted a letter to the Chief Minister’s Office seeking a thorough probe.
In the letter, the VPP noted that recent remarks by the Chief Minister on the execution of MLA schemes had raised serious concerns. The party referred to his comment suggesting that some schemes may not be properly implemented, particularly in constituencies represented by opposition MLAs.
Basaiawmoit said the VPP welcomed the Chief Minister’s stated concerns regarding proper utilisation of MLA schemes. He added that the party supports transparency and has already directed all its MLAs to ensure that scheme implementation is carried out in an open and accountable manner.
The VPP president further called on the government to order an independent inquiry covering MLA schemes across the State. He suggested the probe begin from 2008, starting with the 22-Nongkrem Constituency, before extending to other constituencies.

According to the party, such an inquiry would help the public understand how MLA schemes have been utilised over the years and strengthen accountability mechanisms.
“To insinuate or suggest anyone of wrongdoing without valid proof will not be taken lightly by the party,” Basaiawmoit said.
