Tura: The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) is set to bolster its membership in Meghalaya following the election of Tura MP Saleng Sangma. As part of its efforts to revitalize its ranks, the IYC has announced the conduct of organizational elections across the state.
A meeting held on November 16 at the Congress Bhawan in Tura saw the IYC unveil its new mobile app, available for download on both Android and iOS platforms, to facilitate the joining process for those looking to become part of the party’s youth wing.
The upcoming elections, to be held at the Assembly, District, and State levels, represent a significant shift in how political leadership is selected within the Congress Party, as per party officials.
“We are committed to identifying young, dynamic leaders who will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of India. These elections will ensure that leaders are chosen based solely on their support within the organization, which reflects the true spirit of democracy,” the IYC said in a statement.
The elections align with the vision of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who has championed democratic reforms within the party, especially its youth wings, including the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).
The meeting was attended by IYC election commissioners Simanchal Khandai and Prakash Kumar, along with local MPYC office bearers.
National IYC president Uday Bhanu Chib emphasized that this initiative would allow young people across the country to directly participate in political leadership. “This marks the dawn of a new era in Indian politics. For the first time, young political leaders in our party will be elected directly by the members themselves. This is a historic step, demonstrating true democracy in action,” he said.
Nominations for the MPYC elections began on November 16 and will close on November 20. Scrutiny of nominations will take place between November 22 and 24, with finalization set for November 25.
The membership drive will run from November 29 to December 15, at 5 PM. During this phase, potential candidates will be able to enroll their supporters as active members, who will then have the right to vote in the elections.
The results of the elections will be announced at a later date.
