Shillong: The All Meghalaya Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan School Teachers’ Association (AMSSASTA) has suspended its 21-day-long sit-in protest following a meeting with cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Monday. The association was assured by the government that their demand for a salary hike would be addressed, though details remain unclear regarding the 100% increment they have sought.

Association president Peter Thyrniang stated that the government confirmed the salary enhancement but noted that it may take a few months due to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in place for the upcoming bypolls. The MCC restricts the government from announcing the specifics of the hike, including the amount and the timeline for implementation.

“We, as an association, announce the suspension of our agitation, which began on October 1. The rally planned for October 23 has been cancelled, as the government has given its assurance,” Thyrniang said.

The last salary increment for SSA teachers was in 2016, eight years ago. Currently, Lower Primary (LP) SSA teachers earn roughly ₹19,000, while Upper Primary teachers receive around ₹20,000.

Despite suspending their protest, the association remains firm in its demand for a 100% salary increase. There are a total of 11,04 elementary teachers under AMSSASTA.
