Shillong: Meghalaya Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh informed on Wednesday that the World Health Organisation (WHO) is currently investigating the details of a sample taken from a child in Tikrikilla, Goalpara district, who was detected with a strain of a virus.
Lyngdoh stated that efforts are underway to identify the virus strain to confirm whether it is indeed polio. “We are conducting door-to-door surveillance, and teams have been upscaled. We are awaiting reports from the institute in Pune, which will indicate the type of strain and whether there is any further threat,” she mentioned.
The health department has initiated vigorous testing in the village where the case was detected. Lyngdoh emphasized that the department will ensure accurate sampling and results before making any public statements to avoid causing confusion.
Lyngdoh also noted that the child diagnosed with the suspected polio strain is currently in stable health. She mentioned potential issues related to the polio drops administered but reiterated that the department will “wait and watch” for confirmed medical results before commenting further.
