NIFT Shillong begins academic year with orientation for new students

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Shillong recently held a three-day Orientation Programme from 31st July to 2nd August 2024. The event was organised to welcome a new cohort of approximately 170 students enrolled in the four-year undergraduate and two-year postgraduate degree programmes. The primary aim of the orientation was to acquaint the freshers with the campus, various departments and courses, available facilities, and teaching faculty.

Shankar Jha, Director of NIFT Shillong, addressed the students on the first day, extending a warm welcome to the new batch.

NIFT Shillong offers four-year undergraduate Bachelor of Design (B.Des) courses in Fashion & Lifestyle Design, Fashion Design, Fashion Communication, and Textile Design. Additionally, it provides two-year postgraduate Master of Fashion Management (MFM) programmes. As the only NIFT campus in the North East region of India, it holds a unique position among NIFT’s 19 campuses nationwide.

To support students from the North East, a certain number of seats are reserved under the Domicile Category for candidates from the eight North Eastern states. This allocation is in addition to the seats available under the national SC/ST category. The initiative provides an opportunity for aspiring students from these states to pursue their education at NIFT Shillong. Furthermore, the institute offers the Sarthak Scholarship Scheme, which covers up to 100% of the academic fees, awarded semester-wise to students from economically weaker backgrounds who meet the necessary criteria.

NIFT is renowned as a premier institute in India for fashion, design, technology, innovation, and retail education. Its course curriculum and pedagogy are designed to prepare students for the challenges of the competitive industry.
