Tura: A tragic turn of events unfolded when a 9-year-old boy from Dadenggre subdivision, who survived a lightning strike, succumbed to his injuries while en route to the hospital due to a landslide blocking the way.

Dechangbirth M Sangma, a resident of Sathegre, was struck by lightning but miraculously survived, despite sustaining severe injuries. His worried relatives rushed him to the Dadenggre CHC for treatment. According to sources, timely medical intervention could have saved his life if not for the landslide that obstructed their path to the hospital.

“His injuries were severe, and timely treatment could have saved his life, but fate had other plans. He succumbed to his injuries on the way because the road was blocked by a huge landslide,” a local informed.

As the death was considered natural, the incident was not initially reported to the authorities. It was only this evening that the West Garo Hills (WGH) police were informed. A police team from Dadenggre is currently investigating the incident to gather more details.

Meanwhile, the devastating flash floods that struck the Dadenggre subdivision brought back memories of the 2014 floods. Many houses were completely submerged, despite their elevated positions. The Dadenggre Bailey bridge was also in danger, with only about one foot of clearance remaining before it would have been overwhelmed.

The extent of the damage caused by the floods is still being assessed, though it is expected to be extensive. During the sudden downpour, residents managed to take cover in higher areas, but many were unable to save their domestic animals. Carcasses of many such animals were discovered after the waters receded.
