Shillong: Meghalaya’s Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem on Friday submitted a letter to Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, urging the ministry to expedite the sanctioning of the much-awaited Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur Road project.
The road’s upgradation is planned in two phases. The first phase, spanning 20 km, will be undertaken by the Ministry of DoNER at an estimated cost of Rs 52.98 crore.
The second phase will be completed through the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
Syiem was accompanied by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. Following their meeting, Syiem described it as fruitful and emphasized the importance of prioritizing this project.

The demand for the road’s upgradation has been ongoing for several years. Recently, a resident of Nongpoh, Bindas Syiem, staged an indefinite hunger strike to demand the construction of this road.
