Tura: The family members of Niksamseng Marak, who was allegedly murdered while inside a rehabilitation centre in Assam’s Goalpara, have written to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of West Garo Hills seeking protection for the complainants and their relatives.
In a letter submitted on July 8, Kilmeline Marak, the victim’s sister, expressed the family’s fears after their names and faces were exposed following the complaint. “There is a fear among us and our relatives as the case relates to residents of Assam who could try not only to threaten us but also cause harm,” she stated.
Niksamseng was allegedly murdered in the New Life Foundation Rehabilitation Centre in Goalpara on July 4, which the centre initially tried to pass off as a suicide. However, a post-mortem examination ruled out suicide, prompting the family to file a First Information Report (FIR) at the Goalpara Police Station. This led to the arrest of eight suspects, while two others involved in the case remain absconding.
According to family sources, the deceased’s wife has received several threatening calls from individuals in Assam over the past few days. This prompted the family to seek intervention from the DC.
