Guwahati: The 16th edition of the India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT commenced on Wednesday at the Foreign Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya.
Scheduled from July 3 to July 16, 2024, the exercise marks a significant bilateral training initiative between the two nations.
The Indian contingent, comprising 45 personnel, is led by a Battalion of SIKKIM SCOUTS along with members from various arms and services. Representing Mongolia is the 150 Quick Reaction Force Battalion of the Mongolian Army. NOMADIC ELEPHANT is an annual event alternately hosted by India and Mongolia, with the previous edition held in Mongolia in July 2023.
The Opening Ceremony witnessed the presence of His Excellency Dambajavyn Ganbold, Ambassador of Mongolia to India, and Major General Prasanna Joshi, General Officer Commanding 51 Sub Area of the Indian Army.
The primary objective of Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT is to enhance joint military capabilities in conducting counter-insurgency operations within a Sub Conventional scenario under Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate. The exercise will focus on tactical operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain.
Tactical drills during the exercise will include Response to a Terrorist Action, Establishment of a Joint Command Post, Intelligence & Surveillance Centre Operations, Helipad/Landing Site Security, Small Team Insertion & Extraction, Special Heliborne Operations, Cordon & Search Operations, and Employment of Drones and Counter Drone Systems, among others.

The closing ceremony on July 16, 2024, will be attended by Major General Gyanbyamba Sunrev, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of Mongolia, and Lieutenant General Zubin A Minwalla, General Officer Commanding 33 Corps of the Indian Army.
Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT aims to facilitate the exchange of best practices in Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) of joint operations between India and Mongolia. It will also strengthen inter-operability, camaraderie, and defense cooperation, further bolstering bilateral relations between the two friendly nations.
