Shillong: In a stunning political upset, Congress candidate Saleng Sangma has made history by defeating Agatha Sangma in the Lok Sabha elections for the Tura Parliamentary Constituency.
Saleng Sangma secured a decisive victory with a margin of approximately 1,55,241 votes, ending the long-standing dominance of the PA Sangma family in the region.
The Tura Parliamentary Constituency has been a stronghold of the National People’s Party (NPP) and the PA Sangma family for decades.
The seat was previously held by the late PA Sangma, a towering figure in Meghalaya politics, who first won the seat in the 1977 Lok Sabha elections.

PA Sangma represented Tura in the Lok Sabha multiple times, serving from 1977-1988, 1991-2008, and 2014-2016. His tenure was briefly interrupted in 1988 and 2008 when he returned to state politics.
Following PA Sangma’s passing in 2016, his son Conrad Sangma won the by-election and served as MP until 2018.
