Shillong: Meghalaya’s Home Minister, Prestone Tynsong, addressed concerns raised by VPP MLA Adelbert Nongrum regarding the recruitment process for the Meghalaya police, clarifying the legality of the advertisement for police posts.
Nongrum had asserted that the advertisement for police posts was illegal, prompting Tynsong to offer clarification. He explained that Nongrum might have overlooked crucial details in the Office Memorandum (OM), particularly the last paragraph.
Tynsong emphasised that the OM exempts certain government departments, including Home Police, Forest and Environment, Excise, and a few others, from its application. This exemption was deemed necessary due to the physical fitness requirements of certain posts within the police force.
Tynsong highlighted that the government, after unanimous decision, exempted specific posts from the General Office Memorandum. The Central Recruitment Board of Police had already sought approval from the Cabinet, which subsequently approved the age limit for applicants as indicated in the advertisement.

The home minister stressed that the age limits were determined after careful consultation with relevant stakeholders, ensuring suitability for the respective sections of the Meghalaya police force.
Tynsong urged both male and female youths not to be misinformed and encouraged them to prepare for online applications. He noted that clearance from the Election Commission of India (ECI) was pending, and once approved, applicants would be duly informed to commence their online applications. The deadline for online applications is proposed to be May 31, 2024.
