Meghalaya: Congress ready to confront govt over coal auction

Shillong: The Opposition Congress in Meghalaya has issued a stern warning to the state government, indicating its readiness to confront the government if it fails to address concerns raised regarding discrepancies in coal assessments.

The discrepancy in question pertains to the disparity between the reported quantity of coal and the actual stock observed at the depot located in Maweit. This incongruity has cast doubts on the legitimacy of coal auctions conducted by Coal India Limited (CIL).

Mukul Sangma, a prominent leader from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), emphasised the urgency of governmental action in response to the situation. Referring to Section 21 of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, Sangma underscored that the offense outlined therein is cognizable, necessitating immediate intervention by the authorities.

Drawing parallels with the prompt response typically seen in cases such as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Sangma highlighted the gravity of the matter and the need for swift action.

Expressing concern over potential complicity at various levels of authority, Sangma called attention to the Supreme Court’s ruling from July 3, 2019, regarding illegal mining in Meghalaya. He questioned the accountability of the authorities responsible for overseeing coal auctions and enforcing judicial mandates.

Sangma cautioned against impunity for those involved in facilitating irregularities that could detrimentally impact the state’s economy. He reiterated the expectation that the government would address the irregularities promptly and decisively.

“Let us see whether the government takes cognisance of this irregularity and act upon or otherwise we will take the government head on,” he added.
