Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, has expressed his support for the state’s Governor, who intends to deliver his address in Hindi during the upcoming Budget session. This support comes in response to the threat from the VPP to boycott the session if the Governor presents his speech in Hindi.
Clarifying the matter, Conrad Sangma emphasised that the rules permit anyone to speak, provided they provide a copy of the speech in English, and this requirement is being met. “Therefore, there is no issue as we are following the rules,” stated the Chief Minister. He added that the Speaker has informed them about arrangements, possibly involving Artificial Intelligence, where Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) can listen to discussions in English, even if conducted in other languages.
Sangma dismissed the controversy as unnecessary, noting that in different situations, many MLAs have spoken in various languages in the Assembly. Highlighting the limitations of the Meghalaya Governor and his decision to speak in Hindi, the Chief Minister stated that there is nothing wrong with this choice.
“I just don’t understand the whole issue that they’re trying to bring up. I think what is more important is the content of what is there in the Governor’s speech and, more importantly, the discussion that we will have on important issues related to the state. We should focus on that,” Sangma emphasised.
