Shillong: Following a meeting with the Meghalaya EMRI Workers Union, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Wednesday assured that the union’s long-awaited 6% salary increase would be implemented immediately.
Lyngdoh revealed that the union had submitted a memorandum requiring urgent attention.
“The first step taken was to negotiate with the MD regarding the pending increment, which hadn’t been received due to the NHM not continuing their engagement with these workers. Ideally, the company should have finalised all terms and conditions before extending their contracts. They are pleased as we have agreed on certain terms they presented to us,” stated Lyngdoh.
President of the Meghalaya EMRI Workers Union, Roypar Kharaswai, expressed satisfaction that the government has agreed to a minimum 6% salary increase based on seniority.
He mentioned that all union members had unanimously accepted the proposed increment during their general meeting. The union represents nearly 300 employees in the state’s 108 emergency services, with the last increment being more than a year ago.
In the meantime, Lyngdoh informed that the tender process faced challenges, and the handover of assets and management of 108 to a competent authority has not been completed.

The minister also announced plans to address the rights of workers in the unorganised sector, particularly their entitlement to holidays and associated terms and conditions. This will serve as a temporary stop-gap arrangement until a more comprehensive plan is established.
“We are pleased that they are satisfied, and we anticipate expediting the tender process in one or two months,” Lyngdoh concluded.
