Shillong: Meghalaya‘s East Jaintia Hills (EJH) District Superintendent of Police on Thursday issued a notification with regard to an upward trend in the number of road accident cases in East Jaintia Hills District.
According to EJH SP Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, 21 lives were lost to road accidents in 2021, while eight people have already died in road accidents to date in 2022 in the district.
“It has been noticed that overspeeding, negligent, reckless and dangerous driving etc are major contributing factors in most of the fatal accidents,” Dhanoa said.
Considering the trend, the district police has urged the general public, especially the young drivers of both four and two wheelers, to not indulge in reckless and dangerous driving while on road, which endangers not only the lives of the drivers and passengers inside the vehicle but also puts the lives of other commuters and pedestrians at risk.
The SP informed that the police department will conduct intensive checking drives throughout the district and those found indulging in overspeeding, drunk driving, reckless and dangerous driving and any other violation of the Motor Vehicle Act would be strictly dealt as per law.
